Do silent killers lurk in dog food?

Famed vet Dr. Marty Goldstein says that 1 in every 1.61 dogs gets cancer.

We humans are aware of the importance of controlling our junk intake. It’s not the same for pets. Even the packaged dog food on shelves that claim to be organic, healthy, and natural are not the best for your pet.

What are the ingredients to avoid?

Preservatives

Commonly used artificial preservers in dry dog food include ethoxyquin (BHA), butylated hydroanisole (BHA) and butylatedhydroxytoluene. FDA is investigating Ethoxyquin as a potential cause of liver and blood problems. Both BHT and BHA have been identified by WHO as cancer-causing substances.

Xylitol

Products sweetened with artificial sweeteners such as xylitol are the next most best dog treats. Products such as peanut butter, sugar-free gum, candy, and candy containing xylitol are all common uses for xylitol. Xylitol poisoning symptoms can develop as soon as 30-60 minutes after ingestion. However, they may also occur up to 12 hours later. These symptoms include vomiting, hypoglycemia (low sugar), and other signs such as lethargy and inability to control movement, collapsing and seizures.

Meat byproducts

The word ‘byproduct meal” on your dog’s food label means that the meat ingredients were sourced from slaughterhouse waste. It may contain the necessary meat for your dog, but it can also contain other unhealthy items such as feet, brains and tumors. You can also find this meat from roadkill, or animals that have died from a disease or were euthanized. These by-products are not suitable for human consumption because of how they are handled after slaughter. These by-products should not be refrigerated right away after slaughter, but can be stored in a hot trailer for several hours to prevent them from being sold to humans.
